You do not need a big office to have brilliant coffee.
In fact, small teams might just enjoy it most.
In short
- 99.18% of the UK’s 5.7 million private sector businesses are small, and they employ 13.1 million people.
- In a small team the coffee machine is the heart of the office: it replaces the coffee run and impresses visitors.
- Compact bean to cup machines with a tank to fill need no building work, just a spot near a power socket.
- Count the cups, ask the team, pick the right spot, share the daily care and make it a ritual.
- As the team grows, step up to a larger machine sized for the new busiest morning.
Small businesses are the UK’s backbone
The latest government figures say it all. At the start of 2025 there were 5.7 million private sector businesses in the UK, and 99.18% of them were small, with fewer than 50 employees.
Small businesses employ 13.1 million people, which is 47% of all private sector employment.
That is millions of people working in small offices, studios, clinics and workshops. And every one of them deserves a great cup of coffee.
Why small teams love good coffee
In a small team, the coffee machine is not just a convenience. It is the heart of the office.
Everyone knows everyone’s order. The person making a round knows that Sam takes a flat white and Priya likes her americano black. That small kindness builds a real team.
It replaces the coffee run. World Coffee Portal’s Coffee At Work Report UK 2026 found that nearly half of employees had left their workplace to buy coffee from a coffee shop in the past year. In a small team, a great machine keeps everyone together, and keeps the conversation flowing.
It impresses visitors. When a client walks into a small office and gets a proper coffee, it says this business takes care over details.
It shows you value people. In a growing business, small gestures count. A great coffee machine is a daily reminder that the team matters.
The good news: small offices have great options
Bean to cup machines come in sizes to suit every team. A compact machine with a built in grinder can make fresh espresso, americanos and milk drinks for a small office, with a tank to fill rather than a plumbed connection.
That means no building work and a quick, simple setup. Find a spot near a power socket, add beans, water and milk, and you are ready.
Five ways to get it right
- Count the cups. Note how many drinks your team makes on a busy day, and when the rush happens. That tells you the size of machine you need.
- Ask the team. Find out what people drink, including decaf, tea and plant milk.
- Pick the right spot. Near power and water, with a little space to stand and chat.
- Share the care. Take turns with the daily clean and with topping up beans and milk. It only takes a few minutes.
- Make it a ritual. A Friday coffee round, a welcome coffee for new starters, a celebration when you win a new client.
Growing with you
One of the best things about starting with a good machine is that it can grow with your business. As the team gets bigger, you can step up to a larger model sized for the new busiest morning.
Many businesses find the coffee machine becomes part of their story. The first proper machine often arrives around the same time as the first proper office, and it becomes a symbol of how far the team has come.
Small team, big culture
Big companies spend a lot of time trying to create the kind of closeness small teams already have. Small businesses have something special: everybody knows each other, everybody pitches in, and everybody notices when things are done well.
Great coffee fits right into that. It is a daily moment that brings the whole team together, without a single meeting invite.
What your team will notice first
The first morning with a proper machine is a small celebration.
The smell. Freshly ground beans fill the office in a way a jar of instant never could.
The choice. Suddenly there is a flat white, a cappuccino and a long black on the menu, plus decaf and tea for anyone who prefers them.
The pause. People linger for a minute or two, chat about the weekend, and head back to their desks a little brighter.
The pride. Visitors comment on it, new starters mention it, and it quietly becomes part of what makes your workplace a good place to be.
In a small team, those moments are noticed by everyone, every day. That is exactly why great coffee punches above its weight in a small business.
